Let’s dive deep into action this Earth Day Eve! 🤿 We’re teaming up with University of Miami’s Rescue a Reef and Deco Divers to host a scuba trip with a purpose! As part of the Planet vs. Plastics Global theme for Earth Day 2024, we will be conducting two scuba cleanups. You can read more about the global campaign here!
First, we’ll meet at 3:30 PM to sign waivers, retrieve rental gear, and do introductions – our team will speak about the harmful impacts of marine debris and plastic pollution, and then go over how to safely conduct a scuba cleanup. After the briefings, we will head offshore to 2 sites on Florida’s Coral Reef to scuba dive and pick up any marine debris and trash that we find. Following the dives, we will collect marine debris data to submit to SEAFAN and PADI Project AWARE for future use by educators, researchers, and policy-makers.
This collaboration between Debris Free Oceans and Rescue a Reef is part of an EPA-funded project called the “Community Coral Garden,” a special site that citizen scientists monitor and collect data to support Rescue a Reef’s coral research on their own! During our trip, you”ll also have the opportunity to learn more about this project and other coral restoration efforts of our friends at Rescue a Reef.
You must have your open-water diver certification and a recommended minimum of 10 logged dives in order to participate. Covered parking is available in the Marina Parking Garage.
Debris Free Oceans will provide gloves, dive shears, and mesh bags. The $20 reservation comes with tanks and weights from Diver’s Paradise, and additional scuba gear is available for rent from the dive shop. Please note that this is not a guided dive- if you would like a dive professional to lead you or your group, indicate this when you register for the trip.

- Select the 4:30pm 2 Tank Dive Trip
- Enter the special trip code “debrisfree”
- Be sure to add any gear rentals if needed!
