Did you know the United States annually uses enough straws to wrap around the Earth 2.5 times? Plastic straws are continuously amongst the top items collected on the beach each year, and yet they are not necessary for most individuals.
National Skip the Straw Day, on February 24, 2023, is a day dedicated to raising awareness of the ecosystem damage caused by plastic disposables. We are partnering with FIU for a strawless celebration at the Biscayne Bay Campus where we will be removing plastic debris from its coastline and learning more about how single-use plastics are affecting our Bay, and what we can do to help.
If you do not need to drink using a straw, commit to skipping the straw to fight against plastic pollution! This is just one simple step you could take to help us achieve a world with less plastic. Whether you choose to use no straw, a reusable straw, or a paper straw, be sure to educate others on why you are making this change. And why stop at straws? Swap out your plastic bags, bottles, cutlery, and more.
Parking: Non-FIU affiliated guests may park on campus at a rate of $1/hour
What to Bring: Please wear closed-toed shoes and bring a reusable water bottle. Feel free to bring personal fabric gloves with palm protection, snacks, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a hat.
