100 students were expected to attend– but nearly 600 came out strong to show some love to Mother Earth!

The Earth Day crowd at Jose Marti MAST High School DID NOT disappoint!

There was an eco-fashion show where students wore pieces they made from repurposed trash + upcycled items— one student even rocked the bag monster! Miami Dade’s RER DERM (Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources) team tabled with a trivia wheel with Biscayne Bay questions and awarded students with Baynanza t-shirts. Other activities included Earth-inspired musical performances, native planting, plant giveaways, and small cleanups around campus. Plastic Free Cities student Alejandro Ganaza spoke to fellow students about the program and their involvement in the community.

We had delicious empanadas and croquetas, plastic-free of course, from Hialeah’s own Bamboo Restaurant and Lounge. Drink Open Water donated canned waters for the event + we brought our own cooler for refills for the epic day.

Huge shoutout to JMM Green Club for all their hard work, and #PlasticFreeCities partners Big Blue & You and Ocean Conversancy for the continued commitment to programs like this that will help shape the 305 into the plastic-free city we know it can be!
